Holistic Education for New Americans (HENA) : After School Program

About The Program

The Holistic Education for New Americans (HENA) initiative in Lowell, MA to support refugee and immigrant families. Held three afternoons a week, HENA offers English and math tutoring, enrichment activities, and ESOL and literacy classes to address gaps caused by interrupted schooling. For parents, the program provides ESOL instruction, school system orientations, and interpretation services. Bilingual counselors and trained community volunteers ensure language and cultural support.

Serving over 200 children annually from countries like Afghanistan, Haiti, and Burma, HENA builds on ACE’s long-standing work with Lowell’s refugee communities. It complements programs in trauma support, women’s empowerment, and youth development, while strengthening local partnerships. With support from UMass Lowell and community leaders, HENA fosters academic growth, social integration, and a sense of belonging—true to ACE’s mission to “weave God’s love across cultures."

Diaper Donation Drive

At ACE Center, we believe that every child deserves dignity, comfort, and the most essentials of care. One of those essentials diapers is something many families struggle to afford.

Our diaper program began in the summer of 2022, sparked by a moment that revealed the depth of this need. A mother came to our center seeking baby clothes. One of our staff noticed her child’s diaper was painfully overfilled and immediately offered a fresh one. The mother’s relief was overwhelming she had no diapers left for her children. That single act of compassion became the seed of our diaper program.

Since then, the demand has grown beyond what we ever imagined.

  • Every month, over 100 families come to ACE Center seeking diapers.

  • In just three years, we have served more than 5,000 families.

  • Many families have three or four children, yet due to limited supply, we can only provide one pack of diapers per family in a month.

One pack of diapers may not be enough, but it is something and even that small gift brings smiles to children’s faces and relief to parents who are struggling.

Today, our shelves are nearly empty. Without your help, we cannot continue to meet this urgent need. We are asking for your support whether through diaper donations or financial contributions to help us provide this necessity to families who have nowhere else to turn.

Your generosity will:

  • Prevent painful rashes and health risks caused by prolonged use of soiled diapers.

  • Ease the burden on parents already facing financial hardship.

  • Bring dignity, comfort, and joy to children in our community.

  • Together, we can ensure that no child goes without this most fundamental need. Please consider donating diapers or contributing to sustaining this vital program.
